PhD in Public Theology and Witness

This program is designed to respond to a growing need for more public trained at the highest level for theological engagement in society. The program will thus equip graduates for public intellectual theological vocations, including activism, politics, research, and ministry. The PhD degree program provides grounding in the content and methods of theological studies in general as a basis for the development of specialized competence in selected fields of study.

â€â€The PhD program in Public Theology and Witness is directed by the Rev. Dr. Teresa L. Smallwood, JD, PhD, the James Franklin Kelly and Hope Eyster Kelly Associate Professor of Public Theology at ²¤ÂÜÊÓÆµ. Instruction and guidance will be offered by the ULS faculty and a cohort of junior and senior fellows.

Format:

  • Two years of full-time coursework  
  • Required residence for the first year must be fulfilled in Pennsylvania
  • Placement with a Senior Fellow in a praxeological context
  • Teaching experiences
  • Comprehensive exams, normally in the third year
  • Dissertation

Available Programs of Study:

  • Christian Traditions and Culture (including Systematic and Constructive Theology, Bible, and Church History)
  • Church and Society (including Racial Justice and Gender and Sexuality Justice)
  • Public Advocacy (including Policy, Communications, and Ethics)

Financial Aid:

  • Full-tuition scholarships for all students admitted into the cohort
  • Generous scholarships available for campus housing
  • Optional compensated teaching fellowships
  • Other stipends are available, depending on student circumstances and areas of study

Admission Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a BA or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants shall have a MDiv or a first graduate theological degree providing equivalent theological background or its educational equivalent from an accredited theological institution.
  • Qualifying degrees are to be completed before matriculation in this program with a minimum GPA of 3.5 or equivalent.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (If necessary, submitting score from: Test of English as a Foreign Language)
