Admission Application Overview

Education

Official Transcripts are required for all degree programs and should be sent electronically by the issuing institution to admissions@uls.edu or mailed to the Philadelphia campus address; Minimum GPA, from previous graduate course work, is 3.5.

References

Four references are required for the PhD degree program (1-Ecclesial/Bishop; 3-Dean/Professor). If it has been some time since your previous academic work, choose someone who can vouch for your ability to do advanced degree work.

International Applicants

Applicants whose language of origin is not English and/or previous instruction is not in English must present scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language - iBT (TOEFL) taken within two years of application to the program. Scores must be reported to ULS by the admissions deadline, using institution code 2371.

International applicants are required to submit a letter from a professor (or other person who knows the student) that vouches for the quality of the applicant’s ability to read technical material, to comprehend, to write and participate in cohort conversation in English at a level suited for study in this doctoral degree. The request for this will be emailed from ULS to this individual.

International Education Verification

Applicants are required to have their education authenticated through World Education Services (WES).Please visit theirand contact WES directly for instructions on obtaining authentication of their transcripts.WES will send the final evaluation to ULS electronically.There is a cost that applicants will incur for this process.

Background Check for International Applicants
Applicants are required to provide an official letter from the issuing agency, in their home country, documenting background check clearances.

Statement of Purpose

Please upload a statement of purpose (700-1000 words, Arial 12-point font, double-spaced, PDF format preferred, Word format acceptable) that describes your research interests in public theology, including the questions, thinkers, and ideas that you plan to explore in depth in your PhD work. Your statement of purpose should further speak about the skills and knowledge you have developed thus far and what further expertise you plan to pursue during your PhD to excel in your research agenda. You should also describe why you want to study at ULS and mention the faculty with whom you would be interested in working with and why.

Note: The statement of purpose for PhD admission is neither a statement of faith nor a spiritual autobiography. If it includes a brief intellectual history, it ought to be ordered “backwards,” from research goals to current academic work and then to previous preparation that leads to this intellectual trajectory.

Academic Paper

One academic paper, in English, (approximately 4000+words or 15+ pages, Arial 12-point font, doubled spaced, PDF format preferred, Word format acceptable) on a topic in or related to public theology

It is expected this academic paper will include a link to an online repository where the applicant shares articles, blog posts, videos, etc., demonstrating current involvement and publication in the area of Public Theology & Witness.

Background Check

Citizens of the United States are required to complete the Background Check provided security by CastleBranch.

Application Fee $50.00 (Non-Refundable)

Fall Application Deadline, January 31st at 11:59pm: A completed application, fee, statement of purpose, academic paper, transcript(s),background check and references

Financial Aid – New students who submit a financial Aid application by June 15 for fall and November 15 for spring will be given priority scholarship awards. The Institutional Financial Aid Application must be completed after you have been admitted and are issued a ULS email account. A link to this application will be provided in your welcome letter from Enrollment Services. As a PhD student, you are eligible to receive ULS tuition scholarships for 3 courses each semester. Visit the ULS Financial Aid webpage to learn more about financial aid policies and opportunities.

Housing - ULS offers residential housing on both the Gettysburg and Philadelphia campus as available. A Student Housing Application may be completed after you have accepted admission but no later than June 15th for fall placement or November 15th for spring placement. Commuter housing is also available on either campus for 1-3 nights per week for the entire semester. Visit the Student Housing webpage for more information.
