First Theological Degree Application Overview

Education

Official Transcripts are required for all degree programs and should be sent electronically by the issuing institution to admissions@uls.edu or mailed to the Philadelphia campus address; Minimum Grade Point Average of 2.8.

Essay for First Theological Degree

Please upload a quality essay(500-600 words, Arial 12-point font, double-spaced in PDF format) that demonstrates your writing proficiency at the graduate level and addresses the following items in a unified narrative:

  • Reasons for considering a First Theological degree
  • Formative influences (such as prior academic work, events, people, books, experiences) leading to this decision
  • Vocational goals (including but not limited to ministry, the academy, social justice work, other forms of service
  •  Why ULS?

Note: Applicants who are involved in the ELCA Candidacy process may use their candidacy essay for insight and inspiration.

References

Three references are required for all degree programs (Pastoral, Academic, Leadership Reference). If it has been some time since your previous academic work, choose someone (current work supervisor) who can vouch for yourability to do advanced degree work.

Applicants are required to complete the Background Check provided securely by CastleBranch.

Other Information

Application Fee $50.00 (Non-Refundable)

Application Deadline: A completed application, fee, essay, transcript(s), background check and reference must be received by June 1 for Fall semester; November 1 for Spring semester.

Financial Aid – New students who submit a Financial Aid Application by June 15 for fall and November 15 for spring will be given priority scholarship awards. The Institutional Financial Aid Application must be completed after you have been admitted and are issued a ULS email account. A link to this application will be provided in your welcome letter from Enrollment Services. As an MDiv/MA student, you are eligible to receive ULS tuition scholarships for 5 courses each semester. Visit the ULS Financial Aid webpage to learn more about financial aid policies and opportunities.

Housing - ULS offers residential housing on both the Gettysburg and Philadelphia campus as available. A Student Housing Application may be completed after you have accepted admission but no later than June 15thfor fall placement or November 15th for spring placement. Commuter housing is also available on either campus for 1-3 nights per week for the entire semester. Visit the the Student Housing webpage for more information.
